Let's face it - dirty politics in America is about as shocking as finding out water is wet. It's been around longer than Uncle Sam's beard, and it's not going anywhere. In fact, you could say it's as American as apple pie... if that apple pie was stuffed with mud, lies, and a dash of scandal.
Take the 1800 presidential election, for example. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two of our beloved Founding Fathers, went at it like cats and dogs. Adams' supporters called Jefferson "a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow, the son of a half-breed Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia mulatto father." Meanwhile, Jefferson's crew painted Adams as a "hideous hermaphroditical character, which has neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman." And we thought mean Tweets were harsh.
Fast forward to the 1970s, and we've got Nixon. Watergate wasn't just a hotel - it became synonymous with political skullduggery. Breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters? That's like the political equivalent of stealing your opponent's playbook and then setting their locker on fire for good measure.
More recently, we've had super PACs throwing shade, leaked emails causing more drama than the STBWFW watching "The Bachelor," and enough trash talking to make Charles Barkley feel right at home.
But hey, maybe dirty politics is just a way of keeping things spicy. After all, if elections were all about boring policy discussions and respectful debates, what would we complain about on social media?
